This is a cytologic specimen from a sample of nasal tissue collected during rhinoscopy. Note the branching
numerous fungal hyphae, which is typical of Aspergillus. This also was confirmed by histologic
evaluation. Click on Image for link to source files

Mitoses are common as is koilocytosis (wrinkled nuclear membrane, perinuclear halo, binucleation; seen here in cervical cytologic smear), a cytopathic effect of Human papillomavirus (HPV). Click on Image for link to source files

CIN 1:Under the Bethesda System of cytological diagnosis, both CIN 1 and koilocytotic atypia/condyloma are categorized as Low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LGSIL), reflecting their similar low incidences of progression. Click on Image for link to source files

CIN 2: CYTOLOGY: Squamous cells with enlarged, irregular, hyperchromatic nuclei. Less cytoplasm, similar to that of intermediate squamous epithelial cell. Under the Bethesda System of cytological diagnosis, CIN 2 and CIN 3 are both categorized as High-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HGSIL), reflecting their similar rates of progression, association with similar "high-" and "intermediate-risk" HPV types (16, 18,45,56 and 31, 33, 35, 51, 52), and the poor interobserver reproducibility in distinguishing between the two lesions cytologically.
