Common Myths: The Cause of Weight Problems

Everyone in my family is overweight, there is nothing I can do about it
WRONG!
While your genes may cause your metabolism to work more efficiently in termns of extracting energy from food and using it, this is not a verdict for obesity. People from overweight families tend to think "fat" but they do not have to be fat. Recognising the problem is the first step to its resolution.

I have been told I have a body type that puts on weight easily. I can't change that!
WRONG!
It is true that you can't totally change you body type - although your lifestyle can have some impact. Body typing is only an informational tool, which is used in combination with a lot of other tools to determine your metabolic and genetic outfit and to determine what the best plan is for you.

All weight problems are caused by overeating
WRONG!
There are numerous conditions and circumstances that can cause weight gain. A stressful event in your life can cause your Cortisol levels to play up, causing weight gain. Your thryoid can be a problem, some types of hormone replacement therapy cause weight gain and many more.

It is impossible to lose weight without exercise - but I have no time for exercise
WRONG!
You can lose weight in the absence of exercise, although exercise helps enormously, both for achieving weight loss and for keeping it off. The Dr Hayes Plan can teach you techniques to fit your exercise in creatively and not lose any time.

It is better to have 6 meals a day than to have all your food in just 1 or 2 meals
Conditionally true!
This is good theory and scientific studies show that it is true: if the identical amount of food is consumed in 6 meals, weight gain is siginficantly less than if it is consumed in only 1 or 2 meals. The reality is though, that it is very difficult to restrict food intake to the needs of a sedentary lifstyle - even with only 1 or 2 meals. More meals usually mean more calories too.

Having breakfast is essential to a good weight loss program
WRONG!
Because of most people's hormonal situation, foods eaten at breakfast time, i.e. not long after wake up time, are burnt less efficiently than food eaten later in the day, i.e. less calories are extracetd from it. However, people who are not breakfast eaters, should not be forced into the habit because they may find it difficult to adjust the rest of their eating habits to the fact that they have already consumed a significant amount of calories in the morning.
