Australian Haematology and Transfusion sites
The Faculty of Science, at QUT's Gardens Point campus,
is set in an environment incorporating the inner city,
gardens and river of the large modern city of Brisbane.
The Faculty focuses strongly on students as clients and
we offer a range of courses that are relevant to the real
world. Academic learning is complemented by industrial
and practical experiences for students. These include a
cooperative education program with industry, student
projects undertaken jointly with industry, and clinical
attachments in the medical science and technology fields.
Our courses combine scientific knowledge and professional
competence with skills in areas such as problem-solving,
communication and team work.
Undergraduate programs are offered in a range of areas
including medical science, medical radiation technology,
life sciences, chemistry, physics, mathematics, geology,
ecology and environmental science. Many courses are
flexible, enabling students to tailor their studies to a
range of career paths, and it is possible to include a
specialisation in biodiversity, forensic science,
materials science, or medical and health physics.
Students can combine science with other QUT disciplines
by doing one of nine double degrees on offer.
Classes in our courses combine face-to-face teaching
with the highly effective use of teaching technologies.
First-year students receive special attention and recent
graduate surveys show that students in all areas find the
teaching staff very helpful throughout the duration of
their degrees. One unique feature of undergraduate
Science at QUT is the special accelerated Dean's Scholars
program which enables high-achieving students to
fast-track their degree program with enrichment in
research.
At the postgraduate level,
the Faculty offers courses in biotechnology, diagnostic
technologies, medical physics, and medical ultrasound.
Coursework masters degree courses are offered in life
science, medical physics and medical ultrasound. Research
Masters and PhD programs are offered in all discipline
areas.The Faculty houses the Co-operative Research
Centre in Diagnostic Technologies, the Centre for
Instrumental and Developmental Chemistry, the Centre for
Medical and Health Physics, the Centre for Molecular
Biotechnology, and the Centre in Statistical Science and
Industrial Mathematics. Research is also concentrated in
the areas of Biomedical Science and Natural Resources.

 Congenital
atransferrinemia (hypotransferrinemia) is a very rare disease which consists
of an absence of transferrin, a plasma protein that transports iron through
the blood. This disease is characterized by a mycrocitic hypochromic anemia,
and an iron deposition in the heart and liver (hemosiderosis). Four out
of the nine atransferrinemia patients in the world were still alive in
the last report (Beutler
2000). Three out of these four patients were treated with purified
apotransferrin. Thus it is crucial getting apotransferrin for
congenital atransferrinemia patients
