Malachite green 0.05 g 
Pyronin B 0.05 g
Water 100 ml

SCARLET R (Alcoholic) - (Gurr)
Scarlet R. 0.5 g 
70% ethanol 100 ml
Dissolve in warm water bath;  filter.

SCARLET R - (Herxheimer)
Scarlet R 1 g 
Acetone 50 ml
70% ethanol 50 ml
Dissolve by shaking;  filter.

SCARLET R (Glycol)- (Gurr)
Scarlet R. 1 g 
Propylene glycol 100 ml
Dissolve in a warm water bath; filter.

SCHAUDINN'S FIXATIVE - (Gurr)
Mercuric chloride satd. squeous solution  100 ml 
Absolute ethanol 50 ml

SHORR'S STAIN S3 - (Gurr)
(Single solution)  
Biebrich scarlet, aqueous 0.5 gm
Orange G 0.25 gm
Fast green FCF 0.075 gm
Phosphotungstic acid 0.5 gm
Phosphomolybdic acid 0.5 gm
Glacial acetic acid 1 ml
Ethanol 50% 100 ml
Dissolve by warming;  then allow to cool and filter.
or:
Shorr's Stain powder (Michrome) 1 gm
Alcohol 50% 55 ml
Glacial acetic acid 0.5 ml
Dissolve the stain by warming with the alcohol;  allow to cool; then add the acetic acid, shake well and filter.

SHUTT'S METHYLENE BLUE - (Gurr)
Ether 100 ml 
Pure methanol 100 ml
Methylene blue  1 g
Hydrochloric acid 0.7 ml
The ether and methyl alcohol should be mixed together before the methylene blue is added.  As soon as the dye is in solution the hydrochloric acid can be added.  The solution is stored in a stoppered bottle and kept in a cool place when not in use.

SOLOCHROME CYANINE - IRON ALUM - (Gurr)
Solochrome Cyanine RS 0.2 g 
Sulphuric Acid 98% 0.5 ml
Water 95 ml
1% aqueous from Alum 5 ml
Place dye in 250 ml. beaker and with a glass rod carefully stir in the acid; effervescence occurs and a thick creamy solution is formed.  Add water and iron alum solution.  Mix thoroughly by stirring, then filter.  The solution keeps well.

STEVENEL'S BLUE - (Gurr)
A. Methylene blue 1 g 
Water 75 ml
B. Potass. permanganate 1.5 g
Water 75 ml
Mix the two solutions in a flask and place in a boiling water bath until the precipitate is redissolved.  Allow to stand half an hour; then filter.

STIEVE'S FIXATIVE - (Gurr)
Mercuric chloride, saturated aqueous 76 ml 
Formalin 20 ml
Acetic acid, glacial 4 ml

SUDAN BLACK - (Alcoholic)
Sudan black 0.5 g 
70% ETHANOL 100 ML
Dissolve in a warm water bath;  cool and filter.

SUDAN BLACK - (P.G. Soln.)
Sudan black 1 g 
Propylene glycol 100 ml
Dissolve by heating to 100 degrees C. for a few minutes;  cool and filter.

SUDAN BLUE - (BZL Blue)
Sudan blue 0.5 g 
50% ethanol 100 ml
Dissolve in warm water bath;  cool and filter.

SUDAN 111 - (Gurr)
Prepare as scarlet R.

SUSA FIXATIVE - (Gurr)
Mercuric chloride 45 g 
Water 800 ml
Sodium chloride 5 g
Trichloracetic acid 20 g
Glacial acetic acid 40 ml
Formalin 200 ml

TARTRAZINE IN CELLOSOLVE - (Gurr)
Tartrazine 1 g 
Cellosolve 100 ml

TOLUIDINE BLUE - (Gurr)
Toluidine blue 1% aqueous.

TOISON'S BLOOD COUNTING FLUID for white and red blood cells - (Gurr)
Sodium sulphate 8 g 
Sodium chloride 1 g
Glycerin 30 ml
Water 150 ml
Dissolve and add:
Genetian violet 8% aqueous 3 ml

TURK'S BLOOD COUNTING FLUID for white blood cells - (Gurr)
Genetian violet 1% aqueous 1 ml 
Glacial acetic acid 1 ml
Water 98 ml

VAN GIESON STAIN - (Picro Fuchsin)
Acid fuchsin 1% aqueous solution  2 ml 
Saturated aqueous picric acid 100 ml

WATER BLUE-ORCEIN - (Gurr)
Water blue 1 g 
Orcein 1 g
Glacial acetic acid 5 g
Glycerol 20 ml
Ethanol, absolute 50 ml
Water      to 100 ml

WEIGERT IRON HAEMATOXYLIN - (Gurr)
A. Haematoxylin 5 g 
Ethanol, absolute 500 ml
B. Ferric chloride (hydrated) 30% aqueous 20 ML
Hydrochloric acid, pure 5 ml
Water 475 ml

WRIGHT BLOOD STAIN - (Gurr)
Wright's stain powder 0.3 gm 
Methanol, pure 100 ml
Place the methyl alcohol in a 250 ml. flask;  add the powder and shake;  plug the neck of the flask lightly with cotton wool; then heat on a water bath.  Allow to cool; then filter.

ZENKER FIXATIVE - (Gurr)
Mercuric chloride 25 g 
Potass. dichromate 12.5 g
Sodium sulphate 5.0 g
Glacial acetic acid 25 ml
Water 500 ml
Keeps badly;  to avoid deterioration omit acetic from stock solution and add immediately before use.

ZENKER-FORMOL - (Gurr)
Prepare to Zenker recipe above but omit acetic acid and add 5 ml formalin per 100 ml immediately before use.

ZIKE'S FLAGELLA MORDANT - (Gurr)
Tannic acid 20 g 
Chrome alum. satd. aqueous soln. (about 14%) 50 ml
Osmic acid 1% 15 ml
Gentian violet satd. aqueous soln. 10 ml
Water 80 ml
Dissolve tannic acid in water by warming, add chrome alum dropwise followed by osmic and gentian violet.
