Both institutions have focused their interest on the biology of microorganisms living in terrestrial habitats and closely collaborate not only in research but also in teaching. They share a common library, workshops and many other facilities. The collaboration is institutionalized by joint appointments and promoted by common research programs such as the Sonderforschungsbereich 395 "Interaktion, Anpassung und katalytische Fńhigkeiten von Bodenmikroorganismen" and the Graduiertenkolleg "Enzymchemie" both funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.

  • University of Tennessee Microbiology Department ``The Department of Microbiology at the University of Tennessee welcomes prospective students to a broad interdisciplinary training to prepare them for professional career opportunities in the academic, public or commercial sectors. The program of study includes course and research possibilities with bacteria, viruses and fungi; cellular and molecular immunology, molecular virology, molecular aspects of microbial physiology, molecular pathogenesis, plant-microbe interactions, microbial ecology, developmental and molecular genetics, and genetic engineering technologies. The primary objective of the graduate program is to give qualified students the opportunity to learn the basic and advanced aspects of microbiology and to develop the intuitive and imaginative awareness that defines and is required to explore a research project. The very latest techniques and equipment allow the student upon attaining the graduate degree to move on with confidence not only into clinical and applied microbiology, but also into cellular and molecular biology or other challenging areas of research. The department is a component of both the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Veterinary Medicine. Its faculty are responsible for teaching microbiology to students in both colleges.``

Staff from the sections for bacteriology, immunology and poultry diseases takes part in the project. All aspects of veterinary microbiology fall within the research area of the institute, but priority is given to projects which deal with the molecular aspects of disease factors of bacteria and molecular aspects of host immune response. The current project falls within both these priority areas. The department provides facilities for in vitro cell assays with poultry cell lines and primary cell cultures. The department is equipped with DNA and immunology laboratories as well as standard microbiology laboratories. Animal facilities are available from the University.
